soft girls

hyper-feminine art

I describe my work as “hyper-feminine,” and it explores ideas about feminine expression and the cute

girly girls are a product of our environment – we’re influenced to believe that if we are “cute” or “feminine” enough we will be valued and loved

the cute and feminine have many parallels.
qualities such as being small, helpless, naïve, delicate, sweet and more… why are so many femmes obsessed with this aesthetic, and what does that mean for women today?

though I am being critical in my work, I am simultaneously celebrating feminine expression. the relationship seems to be a double-edged sword. I believe there is a lot of girl power in hyper femininity – because of how extreme it is and enjoyed almost exclusively by women. while perpetuating feminine stereotypes may be problematic, women should still be free to express themselves however they choose.

I, too, am the girl being depicted in my work. every girly girl is her. the work is ambiguous upon closer inspection—though it appears soft and appealing from a distance, there are mixed feelings present of sadness, anger, violence and sexuality present as well.
